KATS Program

Formerly the Topeka West High School Construction Exploration class, this class moved to Kaw Area Technical School (KATS) in Fall 2005 to reach more students. KATS serves 17 NE Kansas school districts.

The Construction Technology course is designed to expose students to the various career opportunities available to them in commercial construction.  Students learn about safety, tools, blueprint reading, and rigging techniques.  Class activities include: preparing a building site, forming and finishing concrete, and framing a small building to sell in the spring.  The course receives tremendous support from its educational partners in the construction industry and has been created to develop the students interest in all aspects of commercial construction.  This course is recommended for career and college bound students that have an interest in construction science and engineering.

Like the other three programs students have the chance during summer months to work for partner companies to gain valuable work experience out in the field.

Students enrolled in the KATS program build 8x8 cells furnished with working lights and outlets, drywall, and partial plumbing.

A student enrolled in the KATS program surveys the land outside of the classroom.
